Michael has more than 35 years of nonprofit administration and fundraising experience through his consulting work as Senior Vice President with Netzel Grigsby Associates, and as senior staff at San Mateo County Department of Public Health, San Mateo County Hospitals and Clinics, American Heart Association, American Social Health Association, and University of San Francisco.
Michael has worked within the private and public sectors includes social service organizations, healthcare institutions, foundations, local government institutions, universities, independent schools, arts and cultural organizations, and religious institutions. His experience includes managing and implementing multi-million-dollar capital campaigns; goal feasibility studies; financial development plans; foundation and corporate relations; board development; major gifts and annual giving programs; grant writing; strategic planning; marketing and communications; executive searches; fellowship and grants administration; and cultural diversity training.
While at the American Social Health Association, Michael established the nation’s leading health and crisis intervention hotline—the National AIDS Hotline. He served as clinic manager at the San Mateo County Health Center addressing medical and emerging public health concerns. Michael served as CEO for the ACRC, Northern California’s leading community-based research, education, outreach, case management, crisis intervention and food services organization for persons living with life-threatening illnesses, including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. As a Vice President for the American Heart Association’s Western States Affiliate, Michael managed $90 million in fellowship and grant awards.
Michael graduated from the University of San Francisco with a bachelor’s degree in organization behavior and a master’s in human resources and organization development. He served as an adjunct faculty member for the University of San Francisco’s Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management where he taught fundraising and served as organizational project advisor for students enrolled in the Development Director and Executive Director Certificate Programs. Michael has lectured and led workshops on nonprofit fundraising and administration, public health issues, and social services programs at numerous local, national and international conferences and major universities.
Michael is certified as a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), serves as immediate past president for the board of directors of the Golden Gate Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and is a member of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy. Michael has lived in Menlo Park for 25 years and currently works as an independent philanthropy consultant for a wide range of Bay Area nonprofits. Michael currently provides pro bono organizational and fund development counsel for Hagar Services Coalition, Inc. and serves as treasurer for its board of directors.
